The road to state

Eleanor Mancini, Student Writer

School is back in full swing, and Lady Irish Volleyball is preparing for state.

Practicing 2.5 hours a day on average, along with having multiple matches a week, the girls have had both mental and physical roadblocks in order to get to state.

“One of the main things we’ve had to work on is our attitudes. We’re girls, we’ve got a lot of it. We can be really bossy, and it does not help the team, but eventually we get over it,” said Olivia Kozemko, a junior on the team.

Senior Margaret McCarty agrees.

“We have had to learn to cooperate together to work as a team instead of individuals playing,” McCarty said.

Along with cohesive team issues, the girls have to overcome their own individual struggles.

“We can get into a little dilemma, I guess, where we have really bad plays or something, and it affects us because sometimes we can’t get out of it, which is really hard,” said Kozemko.

Sophomore Olivia Cunningham said, “We’ve had to get though a lot of mental blocks, like if we’re not doing well personally, or just if the team is not working together well. For me personally, if I am doing badly in a game, I just get mad at myself, instead of just getting better and fixing it.”

As state approaches, the team has had to grow even closer together.

“We’ve become a better team together, and we’ve worked on the main points of what a volleyball team should be, so it will help us in the long run of going to state. We know what we’re supposed to be doing. We found a way of what we’re going to do and grew on it,” added Kozemko.

Roadblocks aside, getting to state is a process.

“We are trying to take every game at a time and every point at a time so we can stay calm and take it step by step to see the small picture instead of the big picture. It got us to districts and it can get us to state,” said McCarty.

The players are confident and ready to take on the challenges to come.

“We’re going to win,” Kozemko said with certainty.

The team will compete at state on Oct. 18 through 23.
